Last 2/3 months I used a bit of my free time studying Android the so called “Google OS”, that is the result of the Open Handset Alliance.
In this relatively short amount of time I had the possibility to collect information from the official sources, as well as from very interesting and active forums (like this one and this one). I had also the possibility to meet other experts during the Android Code Day event (here a summary what we did there). It was a very good place to ask important business related questions: I should say that the Google Developer Advocate Jason Chen was very keen to answer my tricky questions
.
Spending other words on this here is quite pointless: half of the web speaks about it (while the other half speaks about iPhone
). But I would like to share part of the result of this study:
- A Presentation: “Into the Android” [PDF | HTML+Flash]
- Video #1: MWC - Android running on different ARM-based devices [mp4]
- Video #2: MWC - Android running on E2831 [mp4]
- Source code of the Application I developed for study (actually, is just the Tutorial that comes with the SDK with much more internal documentation
): VSNotepad.tar.gz.
The presentation explains different details of the Development process using the code of this application as an example.
The video are also on Youtube and embedded here after the jump. Continue…

Who knows me better, knows that I love the Web. So, I was seeking for info about the next generation of web.
What I mean with “next generation”? I mean “what we can expect to see in the future”.
And the best place, is to go were people (with good skills) go and start to discuss and brainstorm about this stuff.
I found a very interesting pre-RFC: HTML 5 Working Draft.
All the amazing and cool stuff are coming are there and is pointless for me to report them (just one: Client-Side Persistency!!! COOOOL!). But it’s interesting to see WHO is working on this. I mean, who is ALREADY thinking about what we will have in the “next World Wide Web”.

Ian Hickson. He is famous in “our” world but I never spent a minute taking a look to his CV. And his “poor” (for a person that does what he does) web site.
Tripping around his web page, he is doing his favourite work… in the best place possible to do this (Google).
Besides, another interesting thing to notice is the name of the companies working with him (or, better, that seems to own this VERY IMPORTANT document): Apple, Mozilla and Opera. Why Google is missing if the they pay the Employee?

I tried it from the first release, but I was disappointed because of the “heavyness” of the indexing process: all my apps seems to be like “yawning” at every interaction I did.
But because I like Google (yes, I said! I like it!) I thought “why don’t give to it another chance?”.
I read a post on the Official Google Mac Blog about the latest release (1.1.0.520 (8/31/2007)) and I simply installed it (not a classical Mac OS X installer, but we can forgive this…).
I’ll let you know if all the improvement are enough to “avoid to kill the performance of my pretty honey IceBook”.

Edit: Added a link to the Google Group of the project of Mal about the sync-stuff. It’s name is PySync.
Yesterday I went with a collegue (thank you Serage, particularly for the pictures
) to this event that the Google’s London Office sort twice (or more?) a year. Google London Open Source Jam.
I went for one main reason and other two minors (and… I didn’t know that the most important was another one
):
- The Topic
- To take a look to the Google Office in London (very very close to Victoria Station)
- Free Food (very nice pizza
)
(What’s the “main one” is up to you…
).
The Topic
This time, our topic of interest is Mobile.
- Linux on phones
- JavaME vs JavaSE vs .NET CF vs Native
- Browser technologies: AJAX and Flash
- Building native apps that port to multiple architectures
- Open platforms (e.g. OpenMoko)
- Cross platform testing
- Making the most of mobile hardware (camera, voice, bluetooth, GPS, etc)
- Phone bling

Today is a great day (
): I have added Google Page Rank calculation on the sidebar (→) of my weblog. It’s possible thanks to the PHP class “Google Page Rank Checker” by Emre Odabas, hosted on PHPClasses (the most important source-of-code-and-snippets for PHP Developers).
The class calculates “only” the integer value (between 1 and 10): the graphic representation is by me.
Actual Page Rank? 5!!! O_o

The video, for first:
The official site of this “project” is: http://masterplanthemovie.com/.
Personally, I think only few of these “considerations” are sharable: they should give the source of assertations like “Google and CIA collaboration” and “Google genetic research“.
But, in terms of quality of the video, IT IS AMAZING: an incomparable level of ideas, post-production and super-graphic!!!
